Assignment 1

Like all art glitch art is defined by the artists and interpreted by the those who view the art while Nick Briz has a very hard definition of the what glitch art is while having a disagreement with what his younger self had defined as glitch art. Through these essays although he clearly defines glitch art in part two, I see it as undefined and unlimited as long as it revolves around technology to some degree. The reason for my thoughts is that someone can change the definition of any type of art to an endless degree but this type of art revolves specifically around technology. To put a definition on this type of art that is anything more than vague does not make sense as it could be changed by any user of this art form and if it is considered glitch art by one person but disagreed by another who has the authority to say who is wrong when it comes to art. Nick Briz Defined it strictly most likely because he disagrees with some other glitch artists on weather their art is to be considered glitch art but as he said in the beginning of the video essay his point of view on this topic is constantly changing and won't be the same every time he is on the topic of glitch art.

In video one when Nick Briz edits a picture of a cat it leaves almost nothing but the outer shell of the cat left in the picture and when he edits the dog there is nothing left f the original picture. When considering how glitch art is made, some forms of the art appear to not require a picture of anything specific as long as it has a bit of code you can manipulate. Glitch art can be broken up into many different sub-arts ones requiring more of a photoshop approach or a coding approach along with many others. Upon realizing this I think it is even harder to define glitch art in such a strict manor. The ways that I described would both be considered glitch art by most people meaning that the other forms of glitch art that Nick may disagree with being labeled glitch art is more like a sub form of glitch art that he does not recognize himself as glitch art as he does not think the method of obtaining this glitch art or the finished product should be considered glitch art. From my understanding on this subject there is only one consistency in the definition of glitch art and that is that glitch art is made up of unexpected products using technology.

  2. Nice thoughts here. I agree that trying to find definitions for this stuff can feel vague and nebulous. I do, however, come back to Briz's assertion that glitch art is defined by its means rather than its ends. What that means is that the way you make it is more important to the definition than what it looks like. The essence of glitch practice is that it is about "misuse"–using the digital (or analogue, for that matter) tools in the "wrong" way, or simply in a way in which they were not intended. Seems like a great premise from which to make art and engage in cultural critique!
