My Responses to the "Thoughts On Glitch Art" Videos
Introduction Video - Thoughts On Glitch Art
I
found it interesting that videos and photos can be manipulated in a
non-traditional way, resulting in a glitch effect. It is also interesting
to witness the progression and increasing popularity of glitch art over time.
Video 1 - How to Glitch Art
In
the beginning of the video, Nick Briz states that glitch art is like
taking “a familiar piece of technology and do something unfamiliar with
it.” I think that it is important to sometimes do something that is unfamiliar to us
in order to create something new and innovative such as glitch art.
Though
I have seen a lot of glitch art online, I was not familiar with the
process of how to create it until watching this video, which I found
useful.
Video 2 - Definitions and Conditionals
Nick Briz states that a “glitch is not an error” because “the computer
has not done anything by accident.” Therefore, glitch art is
intentional. He states that it is also “unexpected” - because the
results can be unpredictable. He also states that the definition of “glitch” is different depending on the context or field in which it is used. I found this information useful in terms of furthering my understanding of what glitch art is.
Video 3 - The Politics In/Of Glitch Art
Nick
Briz states that “technology is not neutral” and reflect their
“producer’s worldview.” He explains that there are several versions of
the same program (Text Editor) but they do not all offer the same
features, and therefore are a “political threat.” I was previously unaware
of this topic and how it relates to social media as well.
Video 4 - The Practice Of Everyday Glitch Art
Nick Briz states that “learning to program” is an important aspect of digital literacy, as well as making glitch art. He also mentions a quote which equates Fascism with Facebook. I never thought of it that way until reading the quote.
Nice to see this synthesis of Briz's arguments, Jessica. In future written posts, consider forming some general opinions about the content, then writing a little bit in support of your opinions. Reading this, I get the sense that you engaged deeply in the video essays and developed some new ideas from them. This is great! Now add some of your gut reactions, opinions and observations, whether positive or negative, to flesh out your response. Very helpful quotes here—Briz talks so fast, it's great to see some of the key ideas written out like this.
