AD

The argument of the Adidas commercial is about buying their product because it can help you "Break Free" from your boring life. In the instance during the ad when the main character looks to his Adidas brand shoes then he starts to run and attempts to break out of his nursing home, this shows him trying to escape something that is boring and it is something that many people experience at an old age which helps make the ad relatable to older viewers. The opening scene of the ad shows his normal day at the nursing home with a sad/bored expression on his face through the whole day, this helps to show that it was all bad before he put on the Adidas. After his first attempt at trying to break out he is stopped by the faculty who show mean/angry faces and this helps to convey that other people don't want you to break free from your boring life and that they want your life to stay boring so you have to break free. The Adidas ad shows good usage of their slogan and persuasive marketing for their product, this ad specifically targets the older audience with a secondary audience being younger rebellious teens.

In his numerous attempts to escape the nursing home he shows the other people of the nursing home looking at him and they are inspired with grins on their faces or  looking in awe. From this example we can see that the main character helps to raise the mood of the nursing home and inspire the other residents to make their lives happy again. Once he started trying to break free like the Adidas slogan with Adidas apparel he made every resident in the nursing home inspired and happier. From the vague generalization of the ad we can tell that ad is trying to use their slogan and ad in sync to convey a message that says buy Adidas apparel. In this example a large amount of ethos is shown as the elderly community comes together over the main character wearing an older era Adidas apparel.

From the beginning of the ad we see sad and bored faces everywhere acting as if they are just waiting to die as the days pass by. This gloomy setting is a good use of pathos as it makes the viewers feel pitiful for the residents which is then followed by a transition to Adidas and happiness. The transition helps the viewer associate joy with Adidas apparel as it shows only sadness when there is no Adidas. Then when the Adidas is put on there is suddenly happiness and inspiration as if everybody before that was depressed and tired of living. This example shows the ads ability to convey that Adidas is a source of happiness and it can change your life even in the most saddening circumstances.

The final scene of the ad is the main character attempting to break free from the nursing home while all of the residents cheer him on then the faculty try to stop him while they sport gloomy faces and are seen as oppressors. While he is breaking free from the nursing home another resident stops the faculty with a large grin on face while he is wearing an Adidas tracksuit. The other residents show that there was inspiration and happiness associated with the Adidas apparel as he was the happiest and clearly the most inspired aid the main character escape from the sad place and oppressing faculty. When he is out of the building it shows him overlooking a town while he runs off into the distance with joy followed by the slogan “Break Free” which makes the user feel as if Adidas can help make the viewer happier and help them overcome whatever difficulties they may be facing.

The Adidas ad “Break Free'' depicts an elerdly man escaping from a nursing home with joy whilst wearing Adidas apparel. The ad shows that sad and depressing circumstances can be changed to joyful and inspirational circumstances using Adidas gear as it helps the viewer “Break Free'' from their constraints. Adidas does a good job of showing ethos and pathos throughout the ad and making the viewer feel inspired by the ad to buy their products but their ad uses an example that most people haven't yet experienced in their lives and their slogan could have been better used with the ad if it was more relatable but it still fits well with the target audience. Overall the ad does a decent job of setting the mood then following up with the slogan to make them match. The good use of the ad with the slogan helps make the argument to buy Adidas persuasive but it could have been more persuasive if the ad was more relatable but since the target audience is the elderly it works well to target them.

  1. Ethos and pathos? Is your use of these terms stemming from another course? I'm asking not because you're using them incorrectly, but because they appear in your writing almost as if in response to an assigned question on ethos and pathos in advertising. This aside, it seems that you're hitting on the general narrative at play here—the story arc of an elderly person breaking free of his facility, thereby breaking free of expectations of his behavior—but this writing could use more analysis of HOW this story is conveyed. In that our purposes are to create an interesting audio-visual experience, as opposed to an essay, more dissection of formal choices (color, setting, pace of cuts, style of sound) and socio-economic analysis (ethnicity, financial means, even the nature of the settings) will give you more to point out to us and demonstrate in your video essay.
