“Dial Body Wash TV Commercial, 'Moments That Make You: Dog”
I chose the “Dial Body Wash TV Commercial, 'Moments That Make You: Dog” This ad threw me for a loop at first due to how dramatic the scene is. naturally I quested what it had to do with body wash. I feel this was targeted for people who like dog, and who have a sense of humor. I believe this ad is very contradicting as well as complex depending on how perceived. I say that because due to how dramatic the ad is from the start up until the stranger asks “Is he okay” it seems like the dog is injured. Some may not find that very appealing in any commercial let alone one for body wash and can steer them away from the product. In the same instant the music in the back along with the rain, how she was running in slow motion and had to stop to adjust the dog in her arms creates a sense of concern. It makes you curious as to what’s going on. It gives a sense of security and comfort as well. The way they made it seem as if something was wrong with the dog even tho there wasn’t gives off a sense of comfort to know shed go to that extreme for her dog. That’s how people who like dogs get incorporated in this as well. The ending of the ad it says “the moments that make you, dial body wash gets you clean”. This gives a sense of comfort in knowing no matter how dirty you get that body was will have you clean, rehydrated, and you’ll have soft skin. I think this was abstract because there was many ways it could have been perceived.
Good start, Isaiah, but this analysis needs a bit more detail and decisiveness so that you have more to work with in your video essay. What are the socio-economic implications of the characters? Does the narrative about the dog have anything specifically to do with the product, or are the producers just doing a kind of slight-of-hand to pull on your heartstrings and get your attention? If the overall tone of the ad is funny, what kind of audience does it seem to be targeting? If the narrative doesn't really have anything to do with the product, the ad might be targeting people who are not too concerned about the kind of body wash that they use, rather it's more about convenience and/or image. Take a few more looks at the ad and try to pin point the many intentional decisions by the producers: age of actors, race, economic status, type of setting, style of camera shots... A deeper dive will give you more to work with in your video.
